Around The League: Week #2 Recap
Week 2 of the 2021 NFL regular season started out with a bang yet again with a Thursday game eerily similar to Week 1’s Tampa Bay vs. Dallas game. Actually, even closer than Week 1’s showdown.
The NY Giants looked okay against a good Washington Football Team defense and Taylor Heinicke showed the NFL that he is here to play and he is making a statement that he should be the starter in Washington. Finishing 34 for 46, 336 yards, 2 TD’s and a pick, I will go out on a limb and say that Washington wasted a contract on Fitzpatrick and they should have handed Taylor the rock from day one. Daniel Jones was the leading rusher for the G-Men with 9 carries for 95 yards. And yes, Saquan Barkley was there the whole game. He finished with 13 carries for 57 yards and no TD’s. Very bland offense from NY, but the Washington defense seemed to have an off day and just let the Giants hang around.
Not too many upsets or out of the ordinary happenings on Sunday afternoon, Las Vegas is 2-0, how about that?! The Texans lost, but are showing fight for a dumpster fire of an organization. Sam Darnold and the Panthers starting out 2-0, but let the adversity hit and Darnold will fold, trust me, I’m a Jets fan.
Where things started to get interesting was in the late afternoon games, Tennessee heading into Seattle and taking a W away from the 12th man. Folks, NEVER count Derrick Henry out. Doesn’t matter that the Titans picked up Julio Jones. Derrick Henry IS that Titans offense. Period. Picking up his 10th 150+ yard game of his career, Henry carried his team to a big win over the Seahawks. Which I am okay with as a Jets fan who owns Seattle’s 2022 1st round pick. They can lose the next 15 games as far as I’m concerned. Okay, back to being objective.
The next upset was an upset if you are anyone but a Ravens fan. Ravens holding on and beating Mahomes and the Chiefs on a gutsy call from Lamar Jackson to go for it on 4th down to get the job done. This was the game of the week in my opinion. Mahomes throwing 24/31 for 343, 3 TDs and a pick while Jackson went 18/26 for 239, 1 TD and 2 picks, but ran the ball 16 times for 107 yards and 2 TDs. Personally, I am not a fan of running QBs, but gotta give credit where credit is due. Lamar Jackson is the real deal. Now Baltimore fans need to enjoy this wave while it lasts because as history shows us, running QBs shine bright, but fade early as NFL defenses inevitably figure them out and begin to scheme them into obscurity. But it will be an awesome show while it lasts!
We round out Week 2 in Green Bay for Monday Night Football. Rodgers and company returned to form, handling the Lions 35-17. Rodgers found the end zone 4 times, including 3 passing TDs to Aaron Jones, who also found the end zone one more time on the ground. I think the statement here was that Rodgers still has it, still cares about winning, and can turn it on when he wants to. Also, honorable mention to Jared Goff. He played pretty well on Monday night going 26/36 for 246 yards, 2 scores and a pick. Has a solid relationship with TJ Hockenson who had 8 receptions for 66 yards and a TD. Seems to be trending up for the Lions but the real heroes in Detroit are D’Andre Swift and Jamaal Williams. While this week’s numbers don’t really show the whole story, Jared Goff has a top RB duo and they could end up being lethal in the Motor City.
This was another great week of football and I am going to have to keep saying that I am so glad to have our game back and in full swing! Looking forward to Week 3 and all the hope, all the prayers. All the potential. I live for this game!
