NL Central Showdown

The National League Central is beginning to heat up early on in the 2021 Major League Baseball season. The St. Louis Cardinals lead the way with a 28-22 record. The Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers sitting closely behind. The Cubs and Cardinals are separated by only half a game, but with the Cubs taking this past weekend's series it has Cardinals fans scratching their heads.

What do the Cardinals need to do to secure the National League Central title from the Chicago Cubs? It is in most people’s opinion that the bullpen needs some help with Gallegos, Cabrera, and Reyes seemingly pitching every day. They do currently have RHP Andrew Miller out on a rehab assignment and hoping he is able to find his form that made him the attractive signing a few years ago. The bullpen also needs to get Ryan Helsley and Tyler Webb corrected because they will be very important long relievers down the stretch. The new three batter rule has really thrown a wrench into the way a bullpen is managed in today’s game.

The Cardinals ownership should’ve figured out a way to bring Albert Pujols back this season, but that is a whole other discussion. The Redbirds need some punch off the bench because Justin Williams, Matt Carpenter, and the rest of the crew isn’t getting it done this season. It would be nice if Andrew Knizner could transition to a corner outfield spot because his bat would be an instant upgrade for the lineup. Obviously, he isn’t getting the at-bats needed because Yadier Molina doesn’t miss any games.

Let’s take a look at some of the names floating around for the Cardinals to get before or at the deadline. The names that are floating around that would be an instant difference maker for the pitching staff are SP- Max Scherzer, RP- Brad Hand, and RP- Raisel Iglesias. The Cardinals could try to land the hefty lefty from Texas in OF Joey Gallo. The outfielder that has always seemed to be a fit for the Cardinals is current Miami Marlins Center Fielder Starling Marte. Of course, trading could see the Cardinals move some of our favorite players like Paul DeJong, who has been inconsistent at best when it comes to his ability to hit. The emergence of Edmundo Sosa doesn’t help his cause either.

It should be a fun race to the finish line, so stay tuned baseball fans because the NL Central always seems to be a show. As Jack Buck would say, “We will see you tomorrow night.”
