The Ascension Of Cole Kmet
This season, Cole Kmet will be entering his third year as the Tight End for the Chicago Bears. This is a prime year when tight ends really get acclimated to an offense and start to pop on the stat sheet. QB Justin Fields is coming into his secon. season with Kmet. During their first year together, Fields and Kmet didn’t get too much practice in during the offseason with one another. QB Andy Dalton took first string reps with Kmet, so when the two did get to play with each other it was on the field during gameplay. This has changed during the offseason as the two have gotten to practice before training camp started.
Young quarterbacks often use their tight ends as a security blanket over the middle of the field and this duo looks to take the next step in to making Kmet one of the better sleepers for the 2022 season. Last season Kmet found himself ranking second in targets and receptions for the Bears. recording 60 receptions, 613 yards on 93 targets finishing as the TE 21 in full PPR leagues. He did not score a single touchdown last season, which can be chalked up to a major anomaly. The reason he wasn’t able to find the end zone was that Kmet was being held back by drops and fellow TE Jimmy Graham, who has not re-signed and is currently a free agent. With Graham not in the mix, Kmet will make use of the 17 end zone targets that the former All-Pro garnered last season. This is a huge positive for Kmet, who is a 6’ 6” big bodied possession receiver that will use his size to leap over defenders. He has also made it a point this season on working with Fields to improve his pass catching in traffic. All this will make him a more valuable target as the team shots to get out of the bottom of the NFC North.
The Bears will be behind in most games throughout the season with lack of defense and playmakers, making the team more likely to throw the ball rather than run. Before the season starts, I have Kmet ranked as my TE 8, but his average draft position is around TE 12. By the end of year, he will far exceed his draft position and this is why you need to make sure you grab him fast if you can. Get this guy on your team before his game week one or get him into your lineups.
