Winds Of Change in Minnesota

Like a lot of Vikings fans when we hired Mike Zimmer to be our head coach in 2014, I was excited. We were getting a great defensive mind who was finally getting his chance to be a head coach. We already had a general manager in Rick Spielman who had been in that role for two years and I was excited to see what replacing Childress and his so-called kick ass offense would do for our favorite NFL team. During Zimmer’s tenure we went 74-59-1  including 2-3 in the Postseason with both wins over the Saints including one to get to the NFC Championship game. That championship game however we laid an egg and got destroyed by the Eagles. One thing I will give Zimmer and Spielman credit for is we had some very good drafts and developed some very good lineman, Danielle Hunter, Everson Griffin etc. We also had some very good defenses before the epic collapse. Also, before Zimmer we went 24-39-1 from 2010-2013 with defenses that ranked 31st and 32nd in points allowed in 2011 and 2013. He revitalized our defense into the 11th best scoring defense in 2014 only one year after they were dead last. Although we finished 7-9 that season, we had reason for hope. In year 2 we were 5th in points allowed, went 11-5,  and our defense dominated Rodgers in week 17 to take the division crown.  The next season we lost Teddy Two Gloves Bridgewater to a gruesome injury and finished 6th in scoring defense ending up with a record of 8-8.  In year 4 we went 13-3, the most wins in the regular season since 98 for the team. Our defense also led the NFL in points and yards allowed both. We then beat the Saints on the Keenum to Diggs Minneapolis Miracle, a play where everyone remembers where they were when it happened. Then we went to Philly and got our butts kicked. After that we missed the playoffs 3 of last 4 seasons in large part to our lack of defense. This last season we were 24th in team defense while being a top ten offense. The 20-21 Season we were 29th in team defense. So why did we go from being such a dominant feared defense to a laughing stock at times? Is it because of Zimmer’s age? Is it because he just doesn’t have it anymore and stinks at in game adjustments? Is it because he lost the locker room and things in locker room weren’t as good as we thought? OR is it combination of a terrible relationship between your head coach and general manager that led to both being fired, and let to Spielman going on podcasts blaming  Zimmer for everything and then Zimmer’s model girlfriend responding on twitter. Though I don’t have all the answers, I do know that though I used to like Zimmer a lot, I was ready for a change, and based on things that have come out since, I think there were a lot of players that didn’t like Zimmer and his old school approach.

But now we have Kwesi Adofo – Mensah  a very intelligent former  portfolio manager on Wall Street. He also seems to have great communication skills, and leadership which we lacked in the last regime. And to pair with him we have Kevin O’ Connell as our new head coach, who won a super bowl this last season as offensive coordinator of the Rams. I absolutely believe in this new regime and I’m predicting we make the playoffs both of the next two seasons that we have Kirk Cousins after his recent extension. We signed linebacker Jordan Hicks, just signed Za’Darius Smith, etc. If Hunter and Smith can stay healthy this defense will be a lot of fun to watch with Ed Donatell as defensive coordinator. In 2018 Denver ranked 15th in red zone defense in 2019 and 2020 under Donatell they jumped to 1st in the league. And in 2021 they were 3rd. Though he's older like Zimmer I expect a much better defense more similar to the first few years with Zimmer, also we will be running a 3-4 defense it’s looking like.

Though I was very big on the prospect of Jim Harbaugh coming here and I wanted him badly, after seeing the first moves by this regime  I’m absolutely convinced we got the right guys to lead this team. And as the weather changes in Minnesota and the winds get stronger, we now have winds of change in Minnesota and I’m super excited. #Skol
